Kids in the Kitchen
by Kara Kelso
www.Idea-Queen.comSpending the day baking with the kids has a lot of benefits. They'll never forget the time you spend with them doing something fun. But what they don't realize is you are also teaching them life long skills they'll need when they are an adult.
One of my most fond memories is baking cookies with my grandma. We did it all the time - she'd get out the ingredients, help me measure, and let me dump everything in the bowl. She also made sure we followed directions to a T, another useful skill for kids of all ages.
When cooking with kids, it's not important what you cook but rather how much they are involved. Cookies, brownies, and other treats they'll prefer of course, but also get them involved in making "real" food. Some of my kids favorite dinners come from foods I was taught to make as a kid. Homemade pizza, mashed potatoes, roasts, and other dishes too.
Here are some tips on how to involve your kids in the kitchen:
- Give them specific tasks
Ask them to get out specific ingredients, or show them how to do things such as warm up butter in the microwave. The more specific the better.
- Read instruction out loud
Don't just zip from one direction to the next. Read each direction and ingrediant out loud and clearly. Tell them specifically what you both are doing and why.
- Teach measurements
All your cups and measuring spoons have the measurements right on them, correct? Show your kids what's in the book, and which one you use. Take some extra time for "Tbs" and "tsp". Those can be the most confusing.
- Let them stir and pour
This is the fun part - don't leave them out! Granted you might have to give it an extra stir or clean up a bit of a mess, but this is the best part of cooking with mom and dad. Practice makes perfect!
The most important part is getting them involved. As mentioned before, you aren't just teaching an important skill but building memories!
